So overall, this is a very useful and entertaining book when taken with a grain of salt and with plenty of real-world context.

The color pictures are a very nice touch, and it's a "quick read". But I'd start with Poynter's book first, and maybe do some web searching on "Biosphere2" and "Synergia Ranch" before you dive into "Life Under Glass".Cited by: This book was written years later and at once gives more context and another view on what really happened to the people in this unique experiment.

Whereas both books cover the ecological experiment, this one tells you more about the human side, as the title implies. If you want to learn about Biosphere 2, you would have to read both by: “It necessarily follows that chance alone is at the source of every innovation, and of all creation in the biosphere.

Pure chance, absolutely free but blind, at the very root of the stupendous edifice of evolution: this central concept of modern biology is no longer one. In this book entitled "The Biosphere", researchers from all regions of the world report on their findings to explore the origins, evolution, ecosystems and resource utilization patterns of the biosphere.

Fisher. Long unknown in the West, The Biosphere established the field of biogeochemistry and is one of the classic founding documents of what later became known as Gaia theory. It is the first sustained expression of the idea that life is a geological force that can change Earth's landforms, its climate, and even the contents of its atmosphere.

He explains the workings of its parts and what is. In Harvesting the Biosphere, Smil gives as clear and as numeric a picture as is possible of how humans have altered the biosphere. The book is a bit dry and I had to look up a number of terms that were unfamiliar to me, but it tells a critical story.

Smil starts with a. Ecosystems and the Biosphere as Complex Adaptive Systems development [for example, see Kauffman () and Pacala and Levin ()].

Nonlinearity Because complex adaptive systems change primar- ily through the reinforcement of chance events, such as mutation and environmental variation, operating at local levels, the potential for alternative. The biosphere is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists.

The biosphere extends from the deepest root systems of trees, to the dark environment of ocean trenches, to lush rain forests and high mountaintops.

Scientists describe the Earth in terms of spheres. The solid surface layer of the Earth is the atmosphere is the layer of air that stretches above the lithosphere.

This chapter aims to summarize what is currently known about life in the oceanic crust, which contains all three domains of life and is a vastly underexplored habitat.

This is not the first summary of this topic, and additional content can be found in numerous review and primary research papers [2–16], book chapters [17, 18], and books [19–21]. View deals for Tropical Biosphere Hotel. Near Kihaadhuffaru Island Beach.

The biosphere is composed of living organisms, as well as the physical environment. The physical environment includes the rocky material of Earth’s crust, the water on or near Earth’s surface, and the thin blanket of gas surrounding Earth.

The journal Origins of Life and Evolution of Biospheres places special importance on this interconnection. While any scientific study which contributes to our understanding of the origins, evolution and distribution of life in the Universe is suitable for inclusion in the journal.
